Some common ailments can be kept at bay by simple, cheap and locally available remedies .Joyce Owenya takes us through the health benefits of garlic
Garlic is scientifically known as Allium Sativum (kitunguu saumu). It’s a species of the onion family Alliaceae
Garlic has been used throughout the history for both culinary and medicinal purposes. The garlic plant’s bulb is the most commonly used part of the plant. The cloves (the fleshy sections) are used for cloning, consumption (raw or cooked), or for medicinal purposes, and have a characteristic pungent, spicy flavour that mellows and sweetens considerably with cooking.

Garlic should be stored in a favourable condition of temperature above 18°C to prevent spoilage. It can also be stored in wine or vinegar. Untreated garlic kept in oil can support the growth of deadly Clostridium botulinum.

There are two main chemicals that give it the medicinal properties; allicin and diallyl sulphides.
Some people prefer taking garlic supplements. These pills and capsules can help avoid garlic breath.
MEDICINAL USES OF GARLIC
  1. Reduce blood pressure: It appears that the reputed beneficial effects of garlic on blood pressure come more from the garlic sulphides. Garlic sulphides are not destroyed by cooking. Garlic might also assist blood pressure indirectly by helping to manage cholesterol levels. Extra garlic can be used as a seasoning thus reducing the need for salt.
  2. Antioxidant: Helps to protect the body against damaging “free radical” hence prevent an individual from degenerative diseases such as cancer.
  3. Natural antibiotic and antibacterial: Modern studies confirm that garlic has definite antibiotic properties and is effective against many bacteria, fungi and viruses. Garlic has also been found to be effective against acne. A significant advantage of garlic is that the body does not seem to build up a resistance against it as in the case with many modern antibiotics. This also makes it potentially effective. Garlic has also been reported to have an effect in treating athlete foot fungal infection (reported in BBC on 08th June 2010).However; cooked garlic has no significant antibiotic effect.
  4. Insect repellant: Garlic has been proved to possess   properties that can make it an effective fumigant, this is due to the smell of its  volatile  oils
  5. Lowering of cholesterol levels: The antioxidant properties of garlic prevent LDL’s from being oxidized hence reduce its effects to the body. Garlic decreases the ability of platelets to adhere on the blood vessels, thereby lowering cholesterol concentration and reducing hypertension.
