GOVERNMENT has pledged to continue
supporting various stakeholders in the tourism industry in a bid to up lift the
sector’s contribution to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
This was said by the Permanent Secretary
in the President’s Office Peter Ilomo in Dar es Salaam, yesterday during a short
ceremony to hand over a flag Respicius Baitwa a Tanzanian national who will be
climbing McKinley (Denali) the highest mountain in North America this month.
Baitwa, a Tanzanian with the dream of
reaching the highest peaks of the world’s highest mountains has already reached
four of the highest peaks in the world and anticipates realizing his dream of reaching
seven of the world’s highest peaks next year.

Mountaineering Sports (HPMS) a local based company has already succeeded in
reaching the world’s highest peaks that include Kilimanjaro (19,340 ft) in 1998,Elbrus
(18,510 ft) the highest mountain
in Europe in 2008,Aconcagua (22,840 ft) the highest mountain in the Western hemisphere, located in
western Argentina in 2009 and Kosciusko (7,310ft) in Australia (2011).
According to a speech by Ilomo ,
Government is focused towards empowering all the sectors that contribute to the
country’s economic development adding that Government is committed towards
supporting such sectors to enable them realize their targets.
“We are committed to ensuring that the
country’ total revenue collections increase drastically. We shall not hesitate
to offer support to all stakeholders in a bid to realize this,” he said.
The Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) Managing
Director Dr. Aloyce Nzuki who officially handed over the Tanzanian flag to
Baitwa said Baitwa will be a good ambassador who will open up Tanzania to the
rest of the world.
“We are grateful that Baitwa’s efforts
will be able to sell out the country in general. After he reaches, the peak of
McKinley (Denali) he will raise the country’s flag opening up more tourists’
opportunities,” Nzuki said.
He said TTB will continue with its long
term plan of sensitizing the public on the importance of domestic and foreign
tourism adding that the tourism board will work hand in hand with all
stakeholders in developing the sector.
Baitwa is expected to leave the counter
on Juni 23, 2012 to United States of America to take part in the event which
will take him 21 days and is expected to climb Vinson Massif, the
highest mountain of Antarctica and will conclude his mission with climbing
mountain Everest in Nepal in March 2013.
